It’s usually one of the first questions patients ask, and the honest answer is that it depends. Two people with similar-looking smiles can need very different amounts of time, because what’s happening beneath the surface isn’t always visible. This guide explains the general range, the factors that make treatment shorter or longer, and the parts of the timeline you can influence yourself.
A General Range
Treatment length varies widely. According to Harvard’s dental school, full orthodontic treatment can take anywhere from 6 to 36 months, depending on how severe the problem is and how well the patient follows instructions. Simple alignment concerns sit toward the shorter end, while complex bite or jaw corrections tend to take longer.
That range is only a starting point. Your own estimate comes after an exam, digital scans, and a review of your goals, since how long straightening takes depends on details that only show up during an evaluation.
Case Complexity
The amount and type of tooth movement needed is the biggest factor. Closing a small gap or aligning a few slightly crooked teeth is generally quicker than correcting a deep overbite, an underbite, or a crossbite. Cases that involve creating space, guiding impacted teeth into place, or changing how the upper and lower jaws meet usually require more time. Our guide to common bite problems describes these conditions in more detail.
Age and Growth
Growing patients can sometimes benefit from jaw development that helps certain corrections along. Adults aren’t growing, and the American Association of Orthodontists explains that adult treatment may take slightly longer than a child’s with a similar problem because adult bone is denser. Age alone doesn’t prevent teeth from moving, though, and many adults finish treatment right on schedule.
Appliance Choice
Braces and clear aligners can both handle a wide range of cases, and neither is automatically faster. With aligners, progress depends heavily on wearing the trays as prescribed. With braces, progress depends on keeping the appliance intact and attending adjustment visits. Our guide to braces or clear aligners compares how each option fits different lifestyles.
Your Role Between Visits
Patients play a bigger part in their timeline than most expect. The Harvard School of Dental Medicine also notes that patients who care for their appliances, keep their teeth clean, wear rubber bands or other appliances as instructed, and avoid missing appointments usually finish on time with good results. A few habits make the biggest difference.
- Wearing elastics and aligners for the full time prescribed
- Following food guidelines to prevent broken brackets or wires
- Brushing and flossing carefully to avoid cavities and gum problems
- Moving to the next aligner only when instructed
Good hygiene matters more than it might seem, since cavities or swollen gums can require a pause in treatment. Our guide to caring for braces covers the daily routine.
Keeping Appointments and Avoiding Repairs
Each visit is a chance to adjust wires, check progress, or confirm that aligners are tracking correctly. Missed or postponed appointments can add weeks to the plan. Broken brackets and lost trays can also cause delays, so it helps to know how to handle orthodontic emergencies and when to call the office. Monday and Wednesday afternoon hours can make it easier for students and working adults to keep their visits on track.
Two-Phase Treatment for Children
Some children have a short first phase of treatment while baby and permanent teeth are both present, followed by a resting period and, if needed, a second phase in the teen years. The total span from start to finish can look long on paper, but much of that time is spent monitoring growth rather than wearing appliances. Our guide to orthodontics for kids explains how the phases fit together.
After Active Treatment Ends
Finishing braces or aligners isn’t quite the end of the story. Teeth need time to settle into their new positions, and wearing a retainer as directed protects the results you’ve worked for. Many patients wear retainers long term in some form. Our guide to retainers explains the options and typical routines.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.

I came to Dr. Redmond a little over half way through my 4- year braces journey. As soon as I stepped through the doors, He and his team welcomed me in with excellence and enthusiasm. I cannot speak highly enough of the incredible amount of detail and dedication Dr. Redmond puts into ensuring each of his patients leave his doors looking and feeling confident with their smile. Not only is Dr. Redmond is a master at his craft, he is an incredibly likable and down to earth person. His exemplary attitude, work ethic, and leadership are reflected in each one of the wonderful dental assistant/staff. The office is pristine, with every single detail you can think of taken care of! From upbeat music to refreshments upon walk in, John Redmond Orthodontics is the best of the best! The staff is organized, professional, and absolutely the kindest people ever! A big thank you to each of them for providing such thoughtful and thorough care. After finishing my treatment, I can surely say I have never been more confident in my smile!
