In orthodontics, your bite is simply the way your upper and lower teeth come together. When they meet improperly or don’t meet at all, the result is called a malocclusion, and the American Association of Orthodontists notes that these problems often run in families. The terms can sound technical, so this guide explains each common bite problem in everyday language, along with how it can affect the way you eat, speak, and feel.
What a Healthy Bite Looks Like
In a well-aligned bite, the upper teeth sit slightly in front of and outside the lower teeth when you close your mouth. The front teeth overlap a little, the back teeth fit together evenly, and the center lines of the upper and lower front teeth roughly match. Small variations are normal. Problems start when the teeth or jaws are far enough off that chewing, cleaning, or comfort begins to suffer.
Overbite (Deep Bite)
A certain amount of vertical overlap between the upper and lower front teeth is expected. An overbite becomes a concern when the upper teeth cover too much of the lower teeth. In deeper cases, the lower front teeth can touch the gums behind the upper teeth or the roof of the mouth, which can be uncomfortable and may lead to gum irritation. A deep bite can also put extra wear on the front teeth over time.
Overjet
People often mix up overjet and overbite, but they aren’t the same. Overjet describes how far the upper front teeth stick out horizontally in front of the lower teeth. Some call it protruding or “buck” teeth. A large overjet can make it harder to close the lips comfortably, and teeth that sit far forward may be more likely to chip or break during a fall or a hit to the mouth.
Underbite
With an underbite, the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth when the mouth is closed. According to the AAO, underbites are most often tied to differences in how fast the upper and lower jaws grow, and they can make biting, chewing, and speaking harder. Because jaw growth plays such a large role, the timing of an evaluation matters. Our guide to orthodontics for kids explains why growth years can be a useful window.
Crossbite
A crossbite happens when some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of outside. It can involve front teeth, back teeth, or just a single tooth. Some crossbites cause the jaw to slide to one side when the teeth close, and left alone, that shift can influence how the jaw grows and wear down enamel unevenly. Crossbites in children are often caused by a narrow upper jaw, which is one reason orthodontists watch for them early.
Open Bite
In an open bite, the upper and lower front teeth don’t touch when the back teeth are closed, leaving a visible gap. Some people have the opposite pattern, with a gap between the back teeth instead. Open bites can make it difficult to bite into foods like sandwiches or apples, and they may affect certain speech sounds. They’re sometimes linked to long-term thumb sucking or a tongue that pushes forward during swallowing, though jaw structure can also play a part.
Why Bite Problems Develop
Many bite problems are inherited, passed down through the size and shape of the jaws and teeth. Others develop over time. Habits like prolonged thumb or pacifier use, baby teeth lost too early, and injuries to the face can all change how the teeth and jaws line up. Crowding and gaps often appear alongside bite problems, and our guide to crowding and spacing covers those patterns separately. Orthodontists group these patterns into classes, and an overview of malocclusions shows how that system describes the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
How Bite Problems Can Affect Daily Life
A bad bite isn’t just a cosmetic concern. Misaligned teeth that go untreated may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, abnormal enamel wear, and difficulty chewing, according to the AAO’s overview of common orthodontic problems. Some people also notice strain in the jaw muscles or joints. Jaw pain has many possible causes, so it deserves a careful evaluation, and patients with ongoing discomfort can learn more about TMJ treatment at our office.
If you’re not sure whether any of this applies to you or your child, our guide to signs braces may help lists what to watch for at home.
How Orthodontists Correct Bite Problems
The right approach depends on the type of bite problem, its cause, and the patient’s age. Traditional braces and clear aligners move teeth into better positions, and rubber bands called elastics can help shift how the upper and lower teeth meet. In growing children, appliances such as palatal expanders can widen a narrow upper jaw. For adults with significant jaw differences, orthodontic treatment is sometimes combined with jaw surgery, a decision that’s made case by case.
Every plan starts with a careful exam, since the way an orthodontist fixes bite issues depends on whether teeth, jaws, or both are involved. Correcting the bite can offer benefits beyond appearance, though results depend on each person’s evaluation and commitment to treatment.

Dr. John Redmond earned a Master of Science in Craniofacial Biology and a Certificate in Orthodontics at the University of Southern California, after completing his dental degree with honors at the University of the Pacific. Craniofacial biology is the study of how the face, jaws, and teeth grow, which is central to understanding bite problems in children, teens, and adults. Patients come from throughout the area, including families looking for a San Juan Capistrano orthodontist nearby. I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.
