Braces and clear aligners can both straighten teeth and improve a bite, so the choice often comes down to fit rather than a clear winner. Your case, your habits, and your daily routine all shape which option makes more sense. This guide walks through the factors orthodontists weigh, so you can have a more informed conversation at your consultation.
How Each Option Works
Braces use brackets bonded to the teeth and a wire that guides them into new positions. They stay on for the length of treatment and are adjusted at regular visits. Clear aligners are a series of custom plastic trays, each worn for a set period before moving to the next. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, each set is typically worn for a week or two, and aligners need to stay in for 20 to 22 hours a day, or as your orthodontist prescribes.
If you’re weighing different kinds of braces as well, our guide to types of braces compares metal, ceramic, and hidden options.
Case Complexity
This is usually the deciding factor. Clear aligners handle many mild to moderate alignment concerns well, and the AAO’s orthodontist locator page describes them as a viable alternative for those cases. The AAO also notes that aligners may not work as predictably for severe bite problems, significant tooth rotations, or large gaps, where braces may offer more precision.
Many people assume their teeth are too crooked for aligners, and sometimes they’re right. Other times the answer is more encouraging, which is why the question of whether teeth are too crooked for aligners can only be settled with an exam and digital scans.
Daily Wear and Responsibility
Braces work around the clock without any effort on your part. Aligners only work when they’re in your mouth. Since they’re removable, it’s easy to leave them out a little too long, and inconsistent wear can slow progress or affect results. If you’re confident you’ll keep them in nearly all day, aligners can be a great fit. If you or your teen tends to misplace things or forget routines, braces may remove that variable.
Appearance
Aligners are nearly invisible, which appeals to adults in client-facing jobs and teens who feel self-conscious. Braces are more noticeable, though ceramic brackets blend in better than metal, and InBrace® sits behind the teeth entirely. For patients who want a discreet option but aren’t sure they’ll wear aligners consistently, those braces alternatives are worth discussing.
Eating, Drinking, and Hygiene
Aligners come out for meals, so there are no food restrictions, and brushing and flossing work just as they did before treatment. The catch is that teeth need to be brushed before the trays go back in. The AAO recommends drinking only water while aligners are in, since other liquids can get trapped against the teeth and contribute to staining or cavities.
Braces stay put, which means avoiding hard and sticky foods and taking extra time to clean around brackets. Either way, good habits matter, and our guide to caring for braces covers the routine for both.
Lifestyle, Sports, and Music
Aligners can be removed briefly for a big presentation or a wind instrument lesson, then put back in. Athletes with braces are typically advised to wear a mouthguard for contact sports, and aligner wearers should still ask their orthodontist about protection during play. Our guide to sports with braces covers mouthguard choices. Frequent travelers sometimes prefer aligners because there are fewer urgent repairs, though a lost tray still needs prompt attention.
Age and Stage of Growth
Aligners aren’t just for adults. Many teens do well with them, and the practice offers teen clear aligner treatment for patients who are ready for the responsibility. For younger children whose jaws are still developing, the plan may involve other appliances first. Adults often lean toward aligners for appearance, but plenty choose braces when their case calls for it.
Cost and Timing
Fees and treatment length depend on the complexity of the case more than on the appliance alone. Neither option is automatically faster or less expensive, so the most useful comparison comes from a personal estimate. Our guide to the cost of braces explains what shapes a fee, and many patients deciding between Invisalign® or braces find that budget ends up being a smaller factor than they expected.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Will I realistically wear aligners for most of the day, every day?
- How much does appearance during treatment matter to me?
- Do I play contact sports or an instrument?
- Am I comfortable brushing after every meal or snack?
- Has an orthodontist confirmed which options suit my bite?

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.
