What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Visit

A first orthodontic visit is mostly a conversation. Before You Arrive

You don’t need a referral from your dentist to book an orthodontic evaluation, something the American Association of Orthodontists points out for parents. Plenty of patients simply call because they’ve noticed crowding, a change in their bite, or jaw discomfort.

Completing new patient forms at home shortens check-in and gives the team your dental and medical history ahead of time. What Happens During the Consultation

Most first visits follow a similar process. A team member reviews your dental and medical history and asks what prompted the appointment. Then the orthodontist examines your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw movement, paying attention to how everything fits together when you close and chew.

Records come next. Photos of your face and smile help show how your teeth and jaws relate to each other. Instead of impression trays filled with putty, the office uses iTero™ digital scanning to create a 3D model of your teeth. X-rays may be taken when the orthodontist needs to see roots, teeth that haven’t come in yet, or the structure of the jaw.

How Long the Visit Takes

A first appointment runs longer than a routine adjustment because it includes your history, the exam, records, and a real discussion. Monday and Wednesday appointments run until 6:30 p.m., which can help students who’d rather not miss class.
