Some orthodontic problems are obvious the moment someone smiles. Others hide in the way teeth meet, the way a jaw moves, or the way a child breathes at night. Knowing what to look for helps you decide when it’s time for a professional opinion. None of the signs below confirms a diagnosis on its own, but each one is worth mentioning to an orthodontist.

Signs You Can See

Start with a look in the mirror. The American Dental Association’s MouthHealthy guide notes that correction may be recommended when teeth are crowded, stick out, have large spaces between them, or don’t meet properly. At home, those concerns often look like this.

• Teeth that overlap, twist, or sit in front of or behind their neighbors
• Gaps that seem to be widening
• Upper front teeth that stick out well past the lower teeth
• Lower teeth that sit in front of the upper teeth when biting down
• Front teeth that don’t touch when the back teeth are closed
• A center line between the front teeth that doesn’t match up top and bottom

Signs You Can Feel or Hear

Not every concern shows up in photos. Some of the more telling signs involve how the mouth works. You might notice trouble biting into a sandwich with the front teeth, frequently biting the inside of your cheek, or food getting trapped in the same spots after every meal. A jaw that clicks, pops, or feels tired after chewing can also point to a bite that isn’t lining up.

Speech can offer clues, too. A lisp or difficulty with certain sounds sometimes relates to tooth position, though plenty of speech concerns have other causes. An orthodontist can help sort out whether the teeth are part of the picture.

Signs to Watch for in Children

Kids change quickly, so it helps to pay attention as their teeth come in. Teens tend to be the first to spot changes in their own smiles, especially once most permanent teeth are in. Signs that bring adults in include lower front teeth that have gradually crowded, gaps that open over time, teeth that are wearing unevenly, and teeth that have drifted after braces in childhood, often because a retainer stopped being worn.
