Most people think of orthodontics as a way to straighten teeth. But the size and shape of the jaws also influence the space inside the mouth and nose, which is why some orthodontists pay close attention to breathing patterns during an exam. This guide explains what airway-focused orthodontics means, what signs families often notice, and where orthodontic care may fit into a larger plan that usually involves a physician.
What Airway-Focused Orthodontics Means
Airway-focused orthodontics is an approach that considers how the jaws, palate, and tongue position relate to breathing. A narrow upper jaw or a lower jaw that sits far back can be associated with limited space for airflow. When an orthodontist notices these features, they may factor breathing into the treatment plan and recommend an evaluation by the appropriate medical provider. The goal isn’t to replace medical care. It’s to recognize structural factors an orthodontist is trained to see and address them where appropriate.
Signs Families Often Notice
Breathing concerns can be easy to overlook, especially in kids. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute notes that sleep apnea in children is most common between ages 2 and 8, and lists nighttime signs such as snoring, mouth breathing, pauses in breathing, frequent waking, and bedwetting. During the day, parents may notice trouble focusing, morning headaches, or sleepiness.
Adults may notice loud snoring, waking up tired, or a partner mentioning pauses in breathing. Any of these signs deserves a conversation with a physician, and mentioning them to your orthodontist helps them understand the full picture. Our guide to signs braces may help covers other clues related to jaw development.
Who Diagnoses Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a medical condition diagnosed by a physician, typically after a sleep study. An orthodontist can’t diagnose it, and orthodontic treatment isn’t a cure for it. In children, NHLBI explains that obstructive sleep apnea is often caused by large tonsils or adenoids, which is why a pediatrician or ear, nose, and throat doctor is often involved. For adults, a sleep medicine physician usually leads diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Where Orthodontics May Fit In
Once a physician has evaluated the situation, orthodontic care may play a supporting role. Depending on the patient’s age and needs, it may involve the approaches below.
- Palatal expansion to widen a narrow upper jaw in a growing child
- Bite correction with braces or aligners when jaw position is part of the concern
- Custom oral devices for adults when prescribed as part of a sleep apnea plan
- Coordination with therapists who work on tongue posture and swallowing habits
For adults, NHLBI notes that a provider may prescribe an oral device for patients who don’t want to use or can’t tolerate a CPAP machine, and that patients may be referred to a dentist or orthodontist to have it fitted. For children, NHLBI lists oral devices or orthodontic treatment among several options, alongside approaches such as tonsil and adenoid removal.
Why Timing Matters for Children
Some structural changes are more achievable while a child is still growing. Widening the upper jaw, for instance, is generally more straightforward before growth is complete. That’s one reason early orthodontic checkups matter, and our guide to a child’s first checkup explains the timing. Our overview of orthodontics for kids describes how early treatment phases work.
What to Expect at an Evaluation
An airway-focused orthodontic visit usually starts with questions about sleep, snoring, mouth breathing, and daytime energy. The orthodontist then examines the teeth, jaws, palate, and bite. The office uses iTero™ digital scans to capture a detailed 3D model of the mouth, and additional imaging may be recommended when needed. If breathing concerns come up, the orthodontist may suggest a visit with a physician before any airway-related treatment begins.
Working as a Team
Airway concerns rarely have a single cause, so care often involves several professionals. A pediatrician, an ear, nose, and throat doctor, a sleep physician, or myofunctional therapist may each contribute. Your general dentist stays involved too, and our guide to orthodontists and dentists explains how those roles overlap. Clear communication between providers helps families avoid gaps in care.
Setting Realistic Expectations
Orthodontic treatment can improve jaw alignment and the space available for the tongue, and for some patients that may be one helpful part of a broader plan. Results vary, and orthodontics should never replace a medical diagnosis or treatment prescribed by a physician. A good orthodontist will be clear about what orthodontic care can and can’t do in your situation.
Take the Next Step
Dr. John Redmond holds a Master of Science in Craniofacial Biology from the University of Southern California, where he also completed his Certificate in Orthodontics. That training in how the face and jaws develop informs how he evaluates patients with breathing concerns. The practice’s airway treatment services build on that foundation, combining 3D scanning, a careful exam, and coordination with medical providers. Families from nearby communities, including those looking for a Dana Point orthodontist, are welcome to request an appointment for a complimentary consultation.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.
