Plenty of adults spend years wishing they’d fixed their teeth as kids, only to assume the chance has passed. It hasn’t. Adults make up a meaningful share of orthodontic patients, and many come in for reasons that go well beyond appearance. This guide covers why adults pursue treatment, the discreet options available, and the health factors that make adult care a little different from treating teens.
Why Adults Seek Orthodontic Care
Some adults never had the opportunity for braces growing up. Others wore braces as teens, stopped wearing a retainer, and watched their teeth drift. Many notice lower front teeth gradually crowding, gaps opening, or teeth wearing unevenly. Some are preparing for dental work, such as a crown or implant, and need teeth in better position first. And some simply want to feel more comfortable smiling at work or in photos.
You’re Not Too Old
Age rarely stands in the way. The American Association of Orthodontists explains that the same biological process moves teeth whether you’re 8 or 80. Adults do have denser bone than children and are no longer growing, so treatment may take somewhat longer for a similar problem, but age alone doesn’t keep teeth from moving.
The AAO also notes that certain factors can affect adult outcomes, including existing fillings or crowns, missing or worn teeth, gum disease, some medications, and habits like smoking, clenching, or grinding. That’s why a careful evaluation matters so much for adults. Many of the questions about adult orthodontics patients ask come back to these same considerations.
Discreet Options for Busy Lives
Adults often want treatment that fits into meetings, travel, and social plans. Several options help with that.
- Clear aligners. Nearly invisible and removable for meals, though they need to be worn most of the day.
- Ceramic braces. Tooth-colored brackets that blend in with the smile.
- InBrace® hidden braces. A custom appliance placed behind the teeth, out of view from the front.
- Traditional metal braces. Highly effective and often the most economical, for adults who care less about appearance.
The right choice depends on your bite and your routine, and our guide to braces versus aligners walks through the tradeoffs.
Gum and Bone Health Come First
Teeth move through bone, so healthy gums and supporting bone are the foundation of adult treatment. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research notes that periodontal disease can spread to the bone around the teeth, and that smoking is its most significant risk factor. Gum problems don’t automatically rule out orthodontics, but they usually need to be under control before teeth are moved.
Adults with a history of bone loss often wonder whether braces are still possible, and the approach to treating bone loss usually starts with recent X-rays and a conversation with your dentist or periodontist before any teeth are moved.
Working With Your General Dentist
Adult treatment is often a team effort. Your dentist keeps up with cleanings and exams during treatment and may plan crowns, bridges, or implants around the final tooth positions. In some cases, moving teeth first makes that restorative work simpler. Our guide to orthodontists and dentists explains how the two roles fit together.
What Adult Treatment Feels Like
Most adults adjust quickly. Expect some pressure or soreness for a few days after starting treatment or switching to a new stage, which usually fades on its own. Speech may feel slightly different at first with aligners or hidden braces. Appointments can often be scheduled around work, and the office’s afternoon hours on Mondays and Wednesdays help many professionals avoid missing time. How long treatment lasts depends on the case, and our guide to the treatment timeline explains the variables.
Keeping Your Results
Adult teeth can keep shifting throughout life, which is one reason many adults end up back in treatment after childhood braces. Wearing retainers as directed is the most reliable way to protect the time and money you invest.
Planning Around Benefits
Dental plans vary widely on adult orthodontic coverage, and many limit or exclude it. HSA and FSA funds may help, and payment options can spread costs over time. Our guide to insurance and financing explains what to check before you start.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.
