What’s the Difference Between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?
Dentists and orthodontists both care for your teeth, so it’s easy to blur the two. The difference shows up in their training and in the kinds of problems each one handles day to day. Knowing where one role ends and the other begins makes it easier to decide who to call, and it explains why you’ll keep seeing both while your teeth are being straightened.
Same Starting Point, Different Focus
Every orthodontist starts out as a dentist. Both complete dental school, which is typically a four-year program. The paths split after graduation. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, an orthodontist then spends an additional 24 to 36 months in an accredited residency focused on the bite. That training covers how teeth meet, how they’re aligned, and how the upper and lower jaws relate in size and position.
That extra training is why orthodontists concentrate on alignment and jaw development rather than fillings or cleanings. The American Dental Association’s MouthHealthy guide describes orthodontics as the dental specialty devoted to diagnosing, preventing, and correcting bad bites.
What a General Dentist Handles
Your general dentist is your home base for overall oral health. Their work usually includes the following.
- Routine cleanings and exams
- Fillings for cavities
- Gum disease screening and early treatment
- Crowns, bonding, and repairs for chipped or broken teeth
- Extractions when a tooth can’t be saved
- Guidance on brushing, flossing, and prevention
Dentists also keep an eye on how your teeth are developing and fitting together. When something looks off, they’ll often suggest an orthodontic evaluation.
What an Orthodontist Handles
Orthodontists work on the position of the teeth and the relationship between the jaws. Common reasons people see one include crowding, gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and jaws that don’t line up. Treatment might involve braces, clear aligners, expanders, or retainers, depending on the case.
Orthodontists also track growth in children, which is why an early checkup can be so useful. Their work reaches well beyond brackets and wires, covering bite and jaw concerns that affect chewing and comfort as much as appearance.
Can a Dentist Straighten Teeth?
Some can. General dentists are licensed to practice dentistry, and the AAO notes that some states allow them to provide specialty services without formal residency training in that specialty. So a dentist may offer aligners or braces without being an orthodontist.
If you’re comparing providers, it’s reasonable to ask whether the person planning your treatment completed an accredited orthodontic residency. Our guide to choosing an orthodontist covers that question and others worth raising. Training, focus, and daily caseload are the biggest differences between the two, and they’re worth keeping in mind as you decide.
Why You Keep Seeing Your Dentist During Treatment
Starting orthodontic care doesn’t replace your dental checkups. If anything, those visits matter more. Brackets, wires, and attachments create extra spots for plaque to collect, and professional cleanings help catch cavities or gum irritation before they slow progress.
Your dentist will recommend a cleaning schedule that fits your needs, and it’s a good idea to keep it. At home, a few adjustments to your routine go a long way, which our guide to caring for braces explains in detail.
How the Two Work Together
Plenty of patients arrive at an orthodontic office because their dentist noticed crowding or a bite problem, though you can also book an evaluation on your own. Once treatment starts, the orthodontist and dentist can share findings when needed. That coordination is especially helpful for adults, since gum and bone health factor into planning. Our page on orthodontics for adults covers those considerations.
Think of it as a team. Your dentist keeps your teeth and gums healthy, and your orthodontist guides them into better alignment. Knowing what to expect at a first orthodontic visit can make that handoff feel less intimidating.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.

I came to Dr. Redmond a little over half way through my 4- year braces journey. As soon as I stepped through the doors, He and his team welcomed me in with excellence and enthusiasm. I cannot speak highly enough of the incredible amount of detail and dedication Dr. Redmond puts into ensuring each of his patients leave his doors looking and feeling confident with their smile. Not only is Dr. Redmond is a master at his craft, he is an incredibly likable and down to earth person. His exemplary attitude, work ethic, and leadership are reflected in each one of the wonderful dental assistant/staff. The office is pristine, with every single detail you can think of taken care of! From upbeat music to refreshments upon walk in, John Redmond Orthodontics is the best of the best! The staff is organized, professional, and absolutely the kindest people ever! A big thank you to each of them for providing such thoughtful and thorough care. After finishing my treatment, I can surely say I have never been more confident in my smile!
