Families often have practical questions before and during treatment, from where the office is to how appointments fit around school. This page gathers quick answers to common questions not fully covered in our other guides, with links to more detail where it helps.
Where is the office located?
The office is at 181 Avenida Vaquero, Suite C, in San Clemente. You can find directions and details about our San Clemente office, and new patients can fill out patient forms ahead of time to speed up check-in.
Which communities does the practice serve?
Patients come from San Clemente and surrounding South Orange County and North San Diego County communities. Families visit from Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, and Oceanside, and the practice also cares for patients looking for a Laguna Niguel orthodontist, an Aliso Viejo orthodontist, orthodontic care in Rancho Mission Viejo, or an orthodontist in Laguna Beach.
What are the office hours?
The office is open Monday and Wednesday from noon until the early evening, with phones answered starting at 8 a.m. On Tuesday and Thursday, hours run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office is closed on weekends. Hours can change around holidays, so it’s a good idea to confirm when you book.
Can appointments work around the school day?
Yes, in many cases. The Monday and Wednesday afternoon hours are popular with students, and booking siblings back to back can save a second trip. Routine checkups are often shorter than the first visit. Our guide to orthodontics for kids covers more tips for balancing treatment with school and activities.
Is there a charge for the first consultation?
No. The first visit is a complimentary consultation that includes an exam, a review of your concerns, and a discussion of options, timing, and costs. Our guide to your first visit explains what to expect and what to bring.
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
No referral is needed. The American Association of Orthodontists notes that families don’t need to wait for a dentist referral to schedule an orthodontic evaluation. You’ll still keep seeing your dentist for cleanings throughout treatment.
Does the office use digital scans instead of molds?
Yes. The practice uses iTero™ digital scanning to capture a 3D model of your teeth, which avoids the messy impression material many people remember from years ago.
Are hidden or clear options available?
Yes. Along with traditional and ceramic braces, the office offers clear aligners and InBrace® hidden braces, which sit behind the teeth. Teens who are ready for the responsibility may be good candidates for teen clear aligners. Common aligner questions, from cleaning to wear time, are covered in Invisalign® questions answered.
Do braces hurt?
Most patients feel pressure or soreness for a few days after braces are placed or adjusted, and it usually fades on its own. Soft foods and orthodontic wax can help. Our guide to caring for braces shares comfort tips, and most everyday questions about wearing braces come down to food, cleaning, and comfort.
Can I transfer to this office in the middle of treatment?
Families sometimes move or change providers partway through treatment. Call the office to discuss your situation, and ask your current orthodontist for copies of your records, X-rays, and treatment notes. The team can review your progress and explain how the remaining care and fees would work.
Does the practice help with jaw pain?
The office offers TMJ treatment as part of its services. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research explains that many jaw disorders last only a short time and go away on their own, so a careful evaluation comes first. When treatment is needed, orthodontic care may be one part of a broader approach rather than a cure.
Will my insurance or Medi-Cal help pay for treatment?
It depends on your plan. Many dental plans include some orthodontic coverage, and Medi-Cal Dental covers orthodontics for children who meet specific criteria. Ask the office about your specific coverage when you book. Our guide to insurance and financing explains how benefits, HSAs, and FSAs typically work.
What if something breaks when the office is closed?
Most broken brackets and poking wires can wait until the office reopens, and orthodontic wax can keep you comfortable in the meantime. Serious injuries need emergency care first. Our guide to orthodontic emergencies explains what to do in each situation.
Where can I find answers to other questions?
The Orthodontic Resources hub covers topics from treatment options to costs, and longer orthodontist FAQs on the blog address more of the questions patients raise, along with other common orthodontic questions that come up during treatment.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Dr. Redmond and all of his staff have been amazing. We have been going here for years as he treated all three of our kids! Highly recommend.

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.

I came to Dr. Redmond a little over half way through my 4- year braces journey. As soon as I stepped through the doors, He and his team welcomed me in with excellence and enthusiasm. I cannot speak highly enough of the incredible amount of detail and dedication Dr. Redmond puts into ensuring each of his patients leave his doors looking and feeling confident with their smile. Not only is Dr. Redmond is a master at his craft, he is an incredibly likable and down to earth person. His exemplary attitude, work ethic, and leadership are reflected in each one of the wonderful dental assistant/staff. The office is pristine, with every single detail you can think of taken care of! From upbeat music to refreshments upon walk in, John Redmond Orthodontics is the best of the best! The staff is organized, professional, and absolutely the kindest people ever! A big thank you to each of them for providing such thoughtful and thorough care. After finishing my treatment, I can surely say I have never been more confident in my smile!
