Cost is one of the first things families want to know, and it’s a fair question. The challenge is that orthodontic fees depend on the details of each case, so a number quoted without an exam isn’t very meaningful. Instead of listing prices, this guide explains what goes into an orthodontic fee, what to ask about your estimate, and how families often make treatment fit their budget.
Why There’s No Single Price
Two patients who both “need braces” can have very different treatment plans. One might need a few teeth gently aligned over a short period, while another needs bite correction, an expander, and elastics over a longer stretch. Each plan involves a different amount of time, materials, and appointments, so the fee reflects the work your specific case requires. That’s why an in-person evaluation comes first, and the practice reviews options, timing, and costs during that first orthodontic visit.
Type of Appliance
Traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, hidden lingual braces, and clear aligners are made from different materials and involve different lab work and planning. Metal braces are often the most economical choice, while tooth-colored or hidden options typically cost more. Our guide to types of braces compares them in more detail. Because the practice offers several braces options for children, teens, and adults, you can weigh appearance against budget with real numbers in hand.
Case Complexity
Simple spacing or mild crowding usually requires less work than a deep overbite, an underbite, impacted teeth, or jaw alignment concerns. Complex cases may involve more appliances, more adjustments, and more careful monitoring, all of which affect the fee.
Length of Treatment
Longer treatment generally means more appointments and more wire changes or aligner sets. How long your case takes depends on complexity, age, and how closely instructions are followed, as explained in our guide to the treatment timeline. Keeping appointments and caring for your appliance helps avoid delays that can add time.
Additional Appliances
Some plans include appliances beyond braces or aligners. Palatal expanders, elastics, space maintainers, and habit appliances each play a specific role, and whether you need them depends on your evaluation. Ask whether these items are included in your estimate or billed separately.
Records, Visits, and Retainers
An orthodontic fee often covers more than the appliance itself. Depending on the practice and the plan, it may include diagnostic records, regular adjustment visits, repairs, and retainers after treatment. Replacement retainers or extra sets are sometimes separate. Knowing what’s included makes it easier to compare estimates fairly, and our guide to retainers explains why they’re such an important part of the plan.
Early Evaluation and Long-Term Costs
Catching certain problems early can sometimes simplify care later. The American Association of Orthodontists explains that jaw and tooth issues left uncorrected can require more expensive and invasive treatment down the road, and that an early visit helps catch problems at the right time. Not every child needs early treatment, but an evaluation can clarify the path ahead. Our guide to a child’s first checkup explains the timing.
Questions to Ask About Your Estimate
A clear estimate should answer these questions.
- What treatment is recommended, and are there other options?
- About how long is treatment expected to last?
- Which appointments, records, and repairs are included?
- Are retainers part of the fee, and what does a replacement cost?
- How much is due upfront, and what payment options are available?
- How will my insurance benefits be applied?
Making Treatment Fit Your Budget
Many families combine several resources. Dental insurance may cover part of orthodontic care, depending on the plan. Health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts can often be used for eligible expenses. Payment plans can spread the balance over time, and the AAO notes that many of its member orthodontists offer affordable payment plans along with complimentary or low-cost consultations. The practice offers flexible repayment plans, and its dedicated financial coordinator can walk you through the details.
Our guide to insurance and financing explains how benefits, HSAs, FSAs, and Medi-Cal work for orthodontic care.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.

I came to Dr. Redmond a little over half way through my 4- year braces journey. As soon as I stepped through the doors, He and his team welcomed me in with excellence and enthusiasm. I cannot speak highly enough of the incredible amount of detail and dedication Dr. Redmond puts into ensuring each of his patients leave his doors looking and feeling confident with their smile. Not only is Dr. Redmond is a master at his craft, he is an incredibly likable and down to earth person. His exemplary attitude, work ethic, and leadership are reflected in each one of the wonderful dental assistant/staff. The office is pristine, with every single detail you can think of taken care of! From upbeat music to refreshments upon walk in, John Redmond Orthodontics is the best of the best! The staff is organized, professional, and absolutely the kindest people ever! A big thank you to each of them for providing such thoughtful and thorough care. After finishing my treatment, I can surely say I have never been more confident in my smile!
