A straighter smile is the part everyone notices, but it’s rarely the whole story. The American Association of Orthodontists describes the real goal of treatment as a healthy bite, one that lets you bite and chew efficiently and comfortably, with an attractive smile as a welcome side effect. This guide looks at the functional benefits orthodontic care can offer, along with an honest note about what treatment can and can’t promise.
Teeth That Are Easier to Keep Clean
Crowded, overlapping teeth create tight corners where plaque hides from a toothbrush and floss. Once teeth are better aligned, those hard-to-reach spots shrink. According to the AAO’s family orthodontic guide, aligned teeth are easier to brush and floss, which helps lower the risk of cavities and gum disease. Good habits still do the heavy lifting, but alignment makes those habits more effective. Our guide to crowding and spacing explains how tooth position affects cleaning.
A More Balanced Bite
When teeth meet evenly, chewing forces spread across many teeth instead of concentrating on a few. That balance can make eating more comfortable and help teeth function the way they’re meant to. Overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites can each interfere with biting or chewing in different ways, and our overview of common bite problems walks through how.
Less Uneven Wear
A bite that’s out of balance can grind down certain teeth faster than others. The AAO notes that premature wear and chipping are common problems when an improper bite goes untreated. Correcting how teeth come together may reduce that uneven wear over time, which can help protect enamel that doesn’t grow back. For adults especially, that protection is often one of the most practical reasons to consider treatment.
Support for Chewing and Speech
Teeth and jaws that line up well can make it easier to bite into foods, chew thoroughly, and form certain sounds. Some patients notice these changes quickly, while others don’t realize how much effort they were putting in until treatment is finished. Speech has many influences beyond tooth position, though, so an orthodontist can help determine whether alignment is actually part of the picture.
Front Teeth That Sit in a Safer Position
Upper front teeth that stick out well past the lower teeth can be more exposed during a fall or a hit to the face. Bringing them into a more protected position may lower that exposure. It’s one reason parents of active kids often ask about treatment, and our guide to sports with braces covers how to protect teeth during treatment itself.
Guiding Growth in Children
For younger patients, orthodontic care can do something that’s harder to achieve later. While the jaws are still growing, appliances like expanders can help guide development and create room for incoming teeth. Early care isn’t right for every child, and many simply need monitoring, but our guide to orthodontics for kids explains when growth can work in a child’s favor.
Confidence in Everyday Life
Many patients say they smile more freely after treatment, whether that’s in school photos, job interviews, or conversations with friends. That shift is personal and varies from one person to the next, but it comes up again and again in patient testimonials. Function and self-image often improve together, which is why the benefits of orthodontic treatment tend to reach beyond the mouth.
What Orthodontics Can and Can’t Promise
Orthodontic treatment can support oral health, but it isn’t a cure-all. It doesn’t replace brushing, flossing, or regular dental visits, and it can’t guarantee freedom from cavities, gum disease, or jaw discomfort. Results also depend on keeping appointments, following instructions, and wearing retainers afterward. Some of the most valuable treatments aren’t cosmetic at all, and many non-cosmetic orthodontic treatments focus entirely on function. The benefits you can expect depend on your evaluation, and an orthodontist can explain which ones apply to your case.
If cost is part of your decision, our guide to the cost of braces explains what goes into a treatment fee.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.

I came to Dr. Redmond a little over half way through my 4- year braces journey. As soon as I stepped through the doors, He and his team welcomed me in with excellence and enthusiasm. I cannot speak highly enough of the incredible amount of detail and dedication Dr. Redmond puts into ensuring each of his patients leave his doors looking and feeling confident with their smile. Not only is Dr. Redmond is a master at his craft, he is an incredibly likable and down to earth person. His exemplary attitude, work ethic, and leadership are reflected in each one of the wonderful dental assistant/staff. The office is pristine, with every single detail you can think of taken care of! From upbeat music to refreshments upon walk in, John Redmond Orthodontics is the best of the best! The staff is organized, professional, and absolutely the kindest people ever! A big thank you to each of them for providing such thoughtful and thorough care. After finishing my treatment, I can surely say I have never been more confident in my smile!
