Reach out to us for an initial consultation when you’re ready to get started.
Orthodontic Care in Orange County, CA
An orthodontist is the specialist you see when your teeth or jaws are out of alignment. Orthodontists diagnose and correct problems with the position of the teeth and jaws. Using braces, clear aligners, and appliances that guide growth, we move teeth into healthier alignment and address bite issues that wear teeth down or make eating harder. Every plan is built around the individual, since no two cases are quite alike.
We treat patients from communities all over Orange County. Young children come in for early evaluations, when we can spot developing issues while the jaw is still growing. Teenagers start treatment once their adult teeth are in. Adults decide it is finally time to fix something that has bothered them for years. Whatever stage you are at, our aim is steady, lasting results and a process you actually understand.

Orthodontic Services We Offer in Orange County
We offer a full range of orthodontic care and shape each plan around the patient rather than a template. It starts with an exam and a conversation about your goals. These are the orthodontics services we provide to patients throughout Orange County.
- Braces. Metal and ceramic braces use brackets and wires to guide teeth into place. They manage everything from mild crowding to complex bite correction, and today’s brackets are smaller and more comfortable than older versions.
- Clear aligners. For milder cases, removable clear aligners straighten teeth without brackets. Many teens and adults like that they come out for meals and photos, though we will say honestly whether they suit your case.
- Early treatment for children. Looking at a child’s bite while the jaw is still developing lets us guide growth and make room for adult teeth. Not every child needs braces right away, so part of our role is knowing when a first visit should happen and when to wait.
- Treatment for teens. With most permanent teeth in place by the teenage years, this is a common time for braces or aligners. We help families fit treatment around school and activities.
- Treatment for adults. Orthodontics works at any age. Many adult patients come to us for a mix of appearance and long-term health, and modern options make the process easier than it once was.
- Airway orthodontics. This looks at how the position of the jaws and teeth relates to breathing. For the right patients, treatment can support a healthier airway alongside straighter teeth.
- TMJ treatment. Trouble with the jaw joint can bring on pain, clicking, and headaches. If you deal with jaw pain or tension, an evaluation can show whether orthodontic care might help.
- Dental Pain Erasure by Synapse. This specialized treatment targets specific sources of dental and facial pain. We can discuss whether it is a fit during your consultation.
- Retainers. After active treatment, a retainer keeps your teeth from drifting back. We will go over all the details regarding wearing a retainer so your results will last.

Why Choose John Redmond Orthodontics in Orange County, CA?
Some people come in for a crooked smile, others for a bite that makes chewing uncomfortable, and plenty bring a child for a first look. With many orthodontists practicing across the county, the real choice comes down to who plans your treatment and how closely they work with you. Two things shape how we approach that.
Where Dr. Redmond Trained
Dr. John Redmond completed his dental education with honors at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and went on to earn graduate training focused entirely on orthodontics. He remains active in the profession as a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists. As an orthodontist in Orange County, CA, he applies that training to every case, from a simple alignment to a more complicated bite or jaw concern.
How We Work With Patients
We have found that patients make better decisions when they understand what is happening and why. At our practice, we take time to explain each option, walk through what treatment involves, and answer whatever you ask. We also sort out insurance and payment early, so cost is clear from the start. Families across Orange County have trusted us with their children’s smiles and their own.
What to Expect From Orthodontic Care
Conditions an Orthodontist Treats
Orthodontic problems range from minor cosmetic concerns to issues that affect how you bite, chew, and even speak. Many of them also make teeth harder to keep clean. The conditions we treat most often include:
- Crowding, when there is not enough room for the teeth to sit straight
- Spacing or gaps between teeth
- Overbite, where the upper front teeth extend well past the lower
- Underbite, where the lower teeth sit ahead of the upper
- Crossbite, where the upper and lower teeth do not line up properly
- Open bite, where the front teeth do not meet when the back teeth close
Treatment depends on the specific problem and how pronounced it is. Braces suit complex movements, while aligners handle many milder cases, and our main goal is to correct bite problems that go beyond the look of a smile.
What Treatment Involves
- Regular visits so we can adjust your braces or check your aligners and confirm progress
- Some soreness after adjustments, which usually fades within a day or two
- A short adjustment period as your mouth gets used to the appliance
- A few changes to your diet, since certain foods can damage braces
- Extra attention to brushing and flossing throughout treatment
Caring for your teeth at home affects your result as much as anything we do in the office, and the long-term benefits of orthodontic treatment are easier to keep when good habits start early.
How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?
Because timelines depend on age, the complexity of the case, and how closely instructions are followed, we will give you an individual estimate during your first visit with us. But here’s what most patients can expect timeline-wise:
- The first appointment covers an exam, imaging, and a discussion of your options
- If you proceed, we begin treatment and explain how to care for your braces or aligners
- You return periodically for adjustments and progress checks
- Most cases run between several months and roughly two years
- Once active treatment ends, a retainer protects the result
Before Your First Appointment
The first visit is primarily about understanding your needs and answering your questions, and we promise that you won’t feel pressured to sign off or start anything that day. Here’s what our orthodontist recommends bringing along to your initial consultation:
- Your dental insurance information and a photo ID
- Recent X-rays from a previous dentist, if you have them
- A list of any medications you take
- Any questions about treatment options, length, or cost

Orthodontic Care Statistics in Orange County, CA

Most people wait for a reason to see an orthodontist rather than scheduling a check before anything looks obviously wrong, and that delay is rarely free. Bite problems and crowding tend to get more complicated, not less, the longer they sit untreated, and the research on when and how often people actually get evaluated backs that up.
- The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation around age 7, well before most parents think to schedule one.
- Nearly 57% of adolescents ages 12 to 19 have had dental caries in their permanent teeth, according to NIDCR survey data, a number that climbs when crowding makes brushing and flossing harder.
- Untreated decay in permanent teeth affects close to 28% of adults ages 20 to 34, per separate NIDCR figures, and a poor bite is one of several factors that make those teeth harder to keep clean.
- NIDCR periodontal research notes it remains the most common cause of adult tooth loss, and misaligned teeth are one of the conditions that make gum disease more likely to take hold.
- A little over 60% of adults ages 18 to 64 reported seeing a dentist within the past year, according to a 2012 national health survey, leaving a sizable share who may be missing the kind of routine visit that catches orthodontic issues early.
These figures come from national research rather than county-specific tracking, but the underlying pattern holds regardless of geography: problems caught early are consistently easier and less involved to correct than the same problems addressed years later.
Mistakes That Can Slow Down Orthodontic Treatment
Most delays in orthodontic treatment aren’t caused by anything complicated. They come from small, avoidable habits that add up over the course of months.
- Skipping the early evaluation. Parents sometimes wait until all of a child’s adult teeth have come in before considering an orthodontic visit. By then, some issues that could have been guided early, like a narrow palate or a developing crossbite, may need a more involved fix.
- Ignoring soreness instead of reporting it. A little discomfort after an adjustment is normal. Ongoing pain that doesn’t fade, or a bracket that’s cutting into the cheek, is not something to just work around until the next scheduled visit.
- Choosing an appliance based on appearance alone. Deciding between traditional braces and something less visible before an exam, rather than after one, sometimes means picking an option that isn’t well suited to the actual case.
- Missing adjustment or checkup appointments. Braces and aligners both depend on a schedule. A missed adjustment can leave a wire doing nothing useful for weeks, and a skipped aligner checkup can let a plan drift without anyone noticing.
- Letting oral hygiene slip during treatment. Plaque builds up faster around brackets and inside aligner trays than most people expect. Poor hygiene during treatment doesn’t just risk cavities. It can also slow tooth movement and, in some cases, damage the gum tissue the teeth are moving through.
- Not asking what happens if the timeline changes. Complex cases sometimes need more time than the original estimate. Patients who don’t ask about this upfront are often caught off guard partway through, which can lead to frustration that has nothing to do with how the treatment is actually progressing.
- Assuming any provider offering braces is equivalent. General dentists sometimes offer basic orthodontic services alongside their regular practice. That isn’t the same as choosing an orthodontist who has completed additional residency training specifically in tooth and jaw movement, whether the case calls for Invisalign or traditional braces.
Orange County Orthodontist FAQs
What’s the real difference between an orthodontist and a dentist who offers braces?
Both are licensed dentists, but an orthodontist has completed two to three additional years of residency training focused entirely on moving teeth and guiding jaw development. General dentists sometimes offer braces or basic aligner therapy after a short certification course, which covers far less ground than a full residency. For straightforward cases the difference may not matter much, but for anything involving significant crowding, bite correction, or jaw growth, that additional training tends to show in the plan and the result.
Does dental insurance usually cover orthodontic treatment?
Many dental plans include some orthodontic benefit, though the amount varies widely and often comes with a lifetime maximum rather than an annual one. Some plans only cover patients under 18, while others extend coverage to adults at a reduced rate, and confirming which category applies is part of every insurance claims review we do before treatment starts. We go over your specific plan up front so you know what’s covered and what isn’t, rather than finding out partway through.
Can I get braces or aligners if I already have crowns, bridges, or implants?
In most cases, yes, though the plan has to account for them differently than it would for natural teeth. Crowns and bridges can usually be moved like any other tooth, within limits, but implants don’t respond to orthodontic force the way real teeth do, since they’re fused directly to the jawbone. An exam identifies which teeth in your mouth can move and which ones the plan needs to work around.
Will I still need to see my regular dentist during orthodontic treatment?
Yes. Orthodontic treatment addresses the position of your teeth and jaws, not cavities, gum health, or general cleanings, which remain your general dentist’s job throughout treatment. Most patients keep their regular six-month dental visits going the entire time they’re in braces or aligners, and we coordinate with your dentist if anything comes up that needs their attention.
What happens if I need to switch orthodontists partway through treatment?
It happens more often than people expect, usually due to a move or an insurance change. A new orthodontist will need your records, current x-rays or scans, and an understanding of the original treatment plan to pick up where things left off. These transitions raise their own set of orthodontics FAQs, starting with whether a remaining balance transfers to the new office or resets under a different fee schedule.
How often will I need to come in once treatment starts?
For traditional braces, visits are typically every four to eight weeks for adjustments. Aligner patients usually come in less often, roughly every six to eight weeks, since much of the day-to-day management happens at home with each new tray. Either way, consistent visits are what let us catch a plan that’s drifting off course before it becomes a bigger fix.
Important Resources for Orange County Orthodontic Patients
What Are Important Local Resources for Orange County Orthodontic Patients?

About John Redmond Orthodontics
John Redmond Orthodontics runs from a single office in San Clemente, yet patients regularly travel in from Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Oceanside, and communities well north of the county’s southern edge. Dr. Redmond holds membership in Orthopreneurs, a national network of orthodontists that shares practice management and treatment-planning approaches across independent offices around the country, a connection distinct from the clinical associations mentioned elsewhere on this page. That combination, one dedicated location paired with regular exposure to how other independent practices handle comparable cases, informs decisions here that go beyond a single office’s internal habits, from how appointments get scheduled to how a treatment plan gets explained to a new patient on day one.

Stacy F

Austin
Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.

His exemplary attitude, work ethic, and leadership are reflected in each one of the wonderful dental assistant/staff. The office is pristine, with every single detail you can think of taken care of! From upbeat music to refreshments upon walk in, John Redmond Orthodontics is the best of the best! The staff is organized, professional, and absolutely the kindest people ever!
