Some bite problems start with an upper jaw that’s too narrow for the teeth growing in. A palatal expander is the appliance orthodontists use to widen that jaw and create room. Parents who hear the term for the first time have plenty of questions, so here’s how it works.
What a Palatal Expander Does
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the device sits across the roof of the mouth and attaches to the upper back teeth. A small screw, or built-in springs or wires, gradually widens it. The result is a broader upper arch with space for teeth that would otherwise crowd.
Who Receives One
The AAO names growing children and young teenagers as candidates for one. That fits the way the jaw develops, because a younger palate responds differently than a mature one. Age, skeletal maturity, and sex all factor into the decision, and each case is judged on its own measurements rather than age alone. Adults may sometimes be candidates, though the options and the approach differ.
An exam is the only way to know which category a patient falls into. The right timing for a first orthodontist visit varies by child.
How the Treatment Moves Along
An expander follows a set of phases. The AAO outlines them this way:
- An evaluation to confirm the patient needs one
- Placement of the appliance
- Activation, with small adjustments over time
- Progress checks along the way
- A hold period so the new width settles
Timing varies by patient, so no single schedule fits everyone. The orthodontist sets the pace after watching how the jaw responds.
Care for Families in Laguna Beach
Parents in Laguna Beach who’ve been told their child’s palate is narrow can start with an evaluation from a Laguna Beach orthodontist. The visit covers the bite, the upper arch, and whether an expander is the right first step.
Dr. Redmond’s team serves Orange County families through its San Clemente office. The practice also serves nearby Laguna Niguel, where a Laguna Niguel pediatric orthodontist evaluates younger patients.
Expanders Work Like Braces
The AAO notes that an expander works similarly to braces, applying gradually increasing pressure over time. Making space first can simplify what comes next.
Families planning the next step can compare Laguna Beach braces with other options once the upper arch has widened. The orthodontist explains the sequence at the evaluation.
Teens and adults who prefer a less visible route can look at Laguna Beach Invisalign treatment. The right choice depends on the bite and the goals.
What to Expect Afterward
Once the hold period ends, the orthodontist plans the rest of treatment. Retention follows because teeth and bone need time to settle, and a good plan for retainers after treatment protects the work.
Patients also learn what to expect day to day, from food choices to cleaning around the appliance. Habits covered in braces care tips carry over to expanders.
Who Is Behind the Treatment
At John Redmond Orthodontics, Dr. M. John Redmond provides adult and pediatric orthodontics, traditional braces, clear aligners, InBrace, airway treatment, and TMJ treatment. He holds a DDS from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and completed a Master of Science in Craniofacial Biology and a Certificate in Orthodontics at the University of Southern California.
Dr. Redmond is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, and the American Dental Association. We treat children and adults, so families can stay with one office as needs change.
We use iTero digital scanning, which can take the place of traditional impression molds before an expander or Invisalign. The scan gives the orthodontist a digital model for planning your child’s treatment.
Next Steps for Your Child
If a dentist has mentioned an expander, or you’ve noticed crowding and want a clearer picture, you can reach out to us for an evaluation. Bring a list of questions about timing and comfort. An exam gives you a plan built around your child’s growth, and a Laguna Beach orthodontist can explain how an expander fits into that plan.

I currently have three kids going through braces here! The staff is so friendly and helpful, especially with changes in insurance. They are mindful of each patient…who is fearful, etc and talk them through each new phase. We have been so happy here!

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.
