Dental Health Issues That Can Be Fixed by Orthodontic Treatment

Schedule Appointment

Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry designed to diagnose, treat, and prevent alignment problems in jaws and teeth. As such, it offers ideal solutions for crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, bite problems, and more. Preventative orthodontics can potentially avert oral care issues later in life.

Here are some of the most common problems orthodontics can treat:

Occlusion Issues

How the teeth line up and fit inside the mouth is known as occlusion. Malocclusion is the term dental professionals use to describe problems with the alignment of the jaw and teeth. When your teeth are improperly aligned in your mouth, you can have bite problems such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or misplaced midline.

Malocclusion may cause issues with eating, biting, chewing, and causing discomfort or difficulty. In some cases, it may even lead to speech impediments. It can also change the facial structure and prevent frequent biting of the tongue or inside of the cheek. Orthodontists offer numerous solutions for treating a malocclusion.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

If an individual clenches or grinds their teeth, they can wear down prematurely. Grinding the teeth can damage the protective tooth enamel as well, and cause other problems with oral health. Also known as bruxism, grinding the teeth is an issue experienced by people of all ages. It is especially likely to happen when baby teeth or permanent teeth are erupting from the gums.

Teeth grinding is generally not a conscious practice, and often occurs during sleep. It may not cause any noticeable symptoms. However, regular dental care can help diagnose the issue. Additionally, orthodontic manipulation of the teeth and jaw can help guide the eruption of baby or permanent teeth to prevent or eliminate the problem, while simultaneously preventing enamel damage and mouth discomfort.

Protruding Teeth

Teeth can stick out as a result of an overbite, where the upper jaw is thrust ahead of the lower jaw. Protruding teeth can cause bite irregularities and uneven pressure on teeth. Improper jaw positioning also affects the formation of the jaw bone and facial structure. Severely protruded teeth can also make it challenging to close the lips completely. Due to increased pressure on the bite, protruded teeth may even lead to bone loss in the jaw if left untreated. Most instances of protrusion respond well to different types of braces.

Gaps and Spacing Issues

Crowding, gaps between teeth, and other spacing issues can lead to oral health problems. Crowded and crooked teeth can be harder to keep clean and free of decay, which could lead to gum disease. Additionally, these teeth problems can affect your appearance and self-esteem. Fortunately, orthodontic braces and other appliances can help move your teeth into the correct position, removing gaps and crowding, and preventing potential dental health problems.

Some of the issues listed here may arise from an accident or injury. And, although orthodontic repairs are more effective, affordable, and comfortable than ever, you can still rack up some significant bills. You might need to file a personal injury claim to get the compensation you deserve for your harm and damages. Call an orthodontist Oceanside, CA like the professionals at John Redmond Orthodontics and schedule a consultation.

Going to rate 5 stars since John and the back-of-house staff are excellent; kind, professional, and skilled. Unfortunately, the front desk are not quite up to par. When I called about retainer removal, I was told about a fee that wasn’t accurate/true, and when I asked for clarity, I was met with dismissive responses like “we can talk about it when you get here,” despite the fact I live over an hour away. On arrival, I wasn’t greeted and was instead cut off with “you’re checked in” before I could speak. The hostility from the receptionists was obvious and unprofessional, which overshadows the otherwise great clinical team.
